Which braces are available on the NHS?
If your child has been referred for orthodontic treatment – or you're wondering whether they might be eligible – here's a guide to the braces available on the NHS and what to expect.
Does my child qualify?
NHS orthodontic treatment is based on clinical need rather than appearance. Eligibility is assessed using a scoring system called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), which looks at how a child’s teeth and bite are developing. Not every child will qualify, but if your child’s dentist thinks they might, they’ll refer them to an orthodontist for a free NHS assessment.
What the NHS provides
Fixed braces are the standard appliance for NHS orthodontic treatment. Metal brackets are bonded to the teeth and connected by wires, which are adjusted over time to move the teeth gradually into position. They work well for a wide range of cases and stay in place throughout treatment, which typically lasts between 12 months and two years. You can customise your metal braces with a choice of coloured elastics, ranging from subtle white and clear to bright pink and blue.
Functional appliances
Some children – particularly those with a significant overbite or jaw discrepancy – may be given a functional appliance alongside fixed braces. These are removable devices that work with the natural growth of the jaw to improve how the upper and lower teeth come together. They tend to be most effective while a child is still growing, so the timing of treatment can make a real difference.
Retainers
Once treatment is complete, retainers are used to hold the teeth in their new positions – without them, teeth have a natural tendency to drift back over time. One set of removable retainers is provided at the end of NHS treatment. Retainers should be worn indefinitely, so they will need replacing as they wear out, and there is a charge for replacements.
What isn’t available on the NHS
Clear aligners and ceramic braces aren’t available on the NHS. If your child would prefer a more discreet option, this would need to be explored privately.
Private treatment
Private orthodontic treatment offers a wider choice of appliances. At Splash Orthodontics, we offer Invisalign, Angel Aligners, Spark Aligners and clear and champagne-coloured fixed braces for younger patients. Fixed retainers are also included at the end of treatment for private patients.
There are also no waiting lists for private treatment, so treatment can begin as soon as you’re ready.
