Questions you might not think to ask at your consultation
Your consultation at Splash Orthodontics is a brilliant first step towards a straighter, healthier smile. During your visit, we’ll cover all the essentials – from your suitability for treatment to the different options available, how long it might take and a clear breakdown of costs and payment plans. But what about the questions that don’t always come to mind straight away?

Not all questions are obvious – here are a few that can help you get the most out of your consultation
1. Are there any treatment options I haven’t considered?
You might already be thinking about aligners – like Invisalign or Angel Aligners – but there may be other options worth exploring too, including fixed braces. If you’re looking for something subtle, flexible or tailored to minor movements, just ask – we’ll help you find the right fit for your lifestyle and goals.
2. What kind of results can I realistically expect?
While we’ll give you a digital preview of your potential results, it’s helpful to ask about what’s achievable based on your teeth, bite and facial features. This opens up an honest conversation about your goals and how we can personalise treatment to suit you.
3. Will I need any extra treatments before or after braces?
In some cases, patients might benefit from seeing their dentist or hygienist before starting orthodontic treatment – for example, if they have gum concerns, cavities or need a hygiene visit. Occasionally, additional treatments like teeth reshaping or whitening might be suggested once your braces come off. We’ll always talk you through this, but it’s a great question to ask if you’re thinking ahead.
4. How will treatment affect my day-to-day life?
Orthodontic treatment can bring some small changes to your routine – whether it’s adjusting to aligners or learning how to brush around brackets. It’s worth asking how your lifestyle might shift (even temporarily), especially if you’re very active, play an instrument or have a busy schedule.
5. Can I travel during treatment?
If you’ve got a holiday or big move planned, bring it up during your consultation. We can talk you through how to manage treatment while you’re away, or help you decide the best time to start.
6. How often will I need to visit during treatment?
While your orthodontic consultation will include a rough timeline, it’s also useful to ask how often you’ll need to come in for adjustments or progress checks. This can help you plan ahead and understand how involved your treatment will be from start to finish.
7. What happens if my teeth don’t move as expected?
It’s worth asking about this early on, just so you know how things are managed if your teeth need a little more time or don’t respond exactly to plan. We’ll talk you through how we monitor progress and what adjustments might look like if they’re needed later down the line.
8. What if something goes wrong?
We’ll always be here to help if anything unexpected happens, but asking about our process for emergency appointments or lost appliances gives you peace of mind. It’s good to know who to contact and what to do if something isn’t quite right between check-ups.
9. Who will I see throughout my treatment?
You’ll meet your orthodontist and treatment coordinator during your consultation, but it’s worth asking who’ll be looking after you during the rest of your journey. We work as a team, and we’ll make sure you feel supported from day one.
10. What happens after treatment ends?
Your new smile doesn’t stop with the braces or aligners coming off. Ask about retainers – how they work, how long you’ll need to wear them and what to expect in the years after treatment. We’ll make sure you know how to keep your smile looking its best for life.
