NHS vs private braces for children

Choosing orthodontic treatment for your child is an important step – and it can come with plenty of questions. Should you go down the NHS route or consider private care? What’s the difference in cost, convenience and results? And how do you know what’s right for your child?

At Splash Orthodontics, we offer both NHS and private orthodontic care from our specialist clinic in Hove. We know that no two smiles are the same, and we’re here to help you explore your options in a relaxed and supportive environment – with no pressure, just expert advice.

What is NHS orthodontic treatment?

NHS orthodontic care is available free of charge for children under 18, but only if they meet the clinical criteria set out by the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). These guidelines are designed to prioritise children with more complex needs – such as severe crowding, bite problems or issues that affect oral health or function.

If your child qualifies, they’ll usually be offered traditional fixed metal braces. These are highly effective and a trusted choice for straightening teeth. While there’s less flexibility in terms of appearance or materials, many children enjoy customising their braces with colourful elastic bands – a simple way to make the experience a bit more personal and fun.

It’s important to be aware that NHS orthodontic care often comes with a waiting list. The time between referral, assessment and the start of treatment can vary depending on demand in your area, so there may be a bit of a delay before your child begins their treatment.

What are the benefits of private treatment?

Private orthodontic treatment gives you greater freedom and choice. If your child doesn’t qualify for NHS care – or if you’d prefer a more tailored experience – private treatment may be a better fit.

At Splash Orthodontics, our private patients have access to a wide range of discreet and flexible treatment options, including:

  • Clear fixed braces – similar to metal braces, but with clear or champagne-coloured brackets for a more subtle look
  • Invisalign – a nearly invisible alternative to braces, using removable aligners
  • Angel Aligners – a clear aligner system offering precision and comfort, similar to Invisalign

One of the main advantages of private care is the ability to start treatment straight away, without long waiting times. We also offer flexible appointment times – including before and after school – to help fit around your family’s routine.

Another key benefit is what’s included after treatment. While NHS care typically provides removable retainers only, private treatment at Splash Orthodontics includes both removable and fixed retainers in the cost. Fixed retainers are thin wires placed behind the teeth to help hold everything in position long term – offering added peace of mind that your child’s smile will stay just as straight as it was on day one.

Choosing the right path for your child

Whether your child is eligible for NHS care or you’re considering private treatment, we’re here to help you make a decision that feels right. Every child’s smile is different, and we take the time to explain each option clearly, so you know exactly what to expect.

If you think your child might qualify for NHS treatment, your general dentist can refer them for an NHS assessment. If you’d prefer not to wait or would like to explore other options, you’re welcome to book a private consultation with us directly. This costs £99 and includes a full assessment with one of our specialist orthodontists. If you choose to go ahead with treatment, the consultation fee will be deducted from the total cost.

Still have questions? We’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re curious about treatment options, eligibility or pricing, our friendly team is always here to help. You can give us a call or book your consultation online – and take the first step towards your child’s straighter, healthier smile.
