Your retainer questions answered

Finishing your orthodontic treatment is a big moment – but it’s not the end of the journey. To keep your smile straight and looking its best, you’ll need to wear retainers.

We know patients often have questions about this final step, so we’ve answered some of the most common ones below. If there’s anything else you’d like to know, we’re always here to help.

Why do I need to wear retainers?

Even after your teeth have been straightened, they can naturally start to move over time – this is called relapse. Retainers are essential for keeping your smile in place, not just in the months after treatment but for the long term. Wearing your retainers as advised by your orthodontist helps maintain your new smile and keeps it looking great for years to come.

How long will I need to wear retainers for?

Unless your orthodontist tells you otherwise, you should wear your removable retainers every night to keep your teeth in position. You’ll return for a check-up around three months after treatment, and your orthodontist will review your progress and advise you on future wear.

If you’re having private treatment, you’ll also have fixed retainers discreetly bonded behind your front teeth. These work all day, every day to protect your smile, while your removable retainers provide extra support overnight.

Will my retainers be uncomfortable?

Your removable retainers might feel a little tight at first – that’s totally normal. It just means they’re doing their job. If they feel painful or don’t seem to fit properly, get in touch and we’ll take a look.

Fixed retainers are very comfortable too – it might just take a few days for your tongue to get used to them.

How do I keep my removable retainers clean?

Once a day, brush your retainers with a toothbrush under cold running water. Avoid hot water, as it can warp the plastic. Don’t use toothpaste – it’s slightly abrasive and can leave scratches.

Once a week, use a specialist retainer cleaner like Retainer Brite to keep them fresh. Our team will show you exactly how to care for them when you finish treatment.

How do I brush with fixed retainers?

You can brush your teeth as normal with a fixed retainer in place – just take a little extra care around the wire. Use a soft toothbrush and gentle circular motions to clean the area where it’s bonded to your teeth.

To clean between your teeth, we recommend using interdental brushes or floss threaders. These help remove food and plaque that your toothbrush might miss.

What should I do if I lose my retainers?

Get in touch with us as soon as you can. The longer you go without wearing them, the more chance your teeth have to shift. We may be able to use your last scan to replace them, or we might need to see you to take a new one.

To avoid any mishaps, always store your retainers in their protective case when you’re not wearing them.

How long do retainers last?

With the right care, retainers can last for several years – but they won’t last forever. Removable retainers can wear down, lose their shape or become damaged over time. Fixed retainers can also last for many years, but the wire or bonding may need repairs now and then.

We’ll check your retainers at your follow-up appointments and let you know if they need replacing. And if you ever spot a crack, loose wire or change in fit, just give us a call – we’re here to help.

Can I buy a spare set of retainers?

Yes – and it’s a great idea. If you order a second set at the same time as your first, we can offer it at a reduced price. Having a spare means you’ll always have a backup if one gets lost or damaged.

You can also receive a free spare set if you refer a friend or family member and they start treatment with us. Just ask our team for details.

I had braces somewhere else – can you help with retainers?

Yes, we’d be happy to help. If you had your treatment elsewhere and your retainers need repairing or replacing, we can arrange an appointment with one of our specialist orthodontists. They’ll check your teeth and take a digital scan so we can make you a new set.

You can find our retainer prices on our website.
