How long do braces take to work?

Taking that first step towards straighter teeth is exciting, but one of the most common questions we hear is: how long will treatment take?

At Splash Orthodontics, we tailor every plan around you, so treatment times can vary. Here’s what affects your timeline – and why it’s important not to rush your results.

What affects how long braces take?

Most orthodontic treatments take between 12 and 24 months, but it can be quicker if you have very mild crowding or spacing. The exact timeframe will depend on several factors, including the complexity of your tooth movements and how closely you follow your treatment plan.

Some patients notice improvements within a few months, but long-lasting, stable results take time and consistency.

Clear aligners vs fixed braces: which is faster?

It’s a common assumption that one type of brace is quicker – but your treatment time depends on your particular case and how closely you follow your orthodontist or therapist’s instructions.

Both fixed braces (metal or clear ceramic) and clear aligners like Invisalign or Angel Aligners usually take between 12 and 24 months. Clear aligners are replaced every 1–2 weeks and must be worn for 20–22 hours a day. Fixed braces are adjusted every 6–12 weeks and stay in place throughout treatment, which means you don’t need to think about taking them in and out.

At your consultation, we’ll talk you through all your options and help you decide which approach is best for your smile.

Why rushing orthodontics isn’t a good idea

Fast results might sound appealing, but speeding through treatment can lead to problems.

Teeth that move too quickly are more likely to relapse – shifting back after treatment ends. There’s also an increased risk of root damage and bone loss if pressure is applied too aggressively.

Lasting results come from a carefully planned, gradual approach. Wearing your retainers after treatment is also essential for keeping your new smile in place.

Do devices like AcceleDent speed up treatment?

Devices like AcceleDent claim to accelerate treatment by using gentle vibrations to stimulate tooth movement. But the evidence behind these tools is limited.

Most independent studies show little to no difference in treatment time compared to standard methods. While marketed as a shortcut, these devices aren’t proven to make treatment faster – and they’re not recommended as a substitute for professional care and consistency.

Invisible braces? No need to rush

If you’re wearing Invisalign or Angel Aligners, following your orthodontist or therapist’s instructions is key to staying on track:

  • Wear your aligners for 20–22 hours a day
  • Change them as instructed
  • Attend regular check-ups to monitor your progress

Aligners offer flexibility and discretion, but they only work as fast as you let them. Wearing them less than recommended can extend your treatment time.
