FAQs about Invisalign braces
Get the low down on Invisalign braces, the extremely popular and effective invisible teeth straightening treatment option.
What are Invisalign braces?
Invisalign uses a series of removable aligners to gradually straighten teeth. These aligners are made from clear plastic material making them virtually invisible. Find out more about Invisalign on our treatments page.
What types of cases can Invisalign treat?
Invisalign can be used to treat the majority of cases, but it is over to the dentist or orthodontist who is treating you to recommend the type of orthodontic treatment you will most benefit from. Experienced Invisalign practitioners, like Dr Iain Hoeltschi, will be confident in treating a broader range of cases using Invisalign than an orthodontist without Invisalign experience.
Who can provide Invisalign treatment?
Both orthodontists and general dentists are able to provide Invisalign; however, the amount of Invisalign experience varies greatly between providers and successful Invisalign treatment relies heavily on the training and experience of the treating clinician. We recommend you do your research before choosing a provider by asking the following questions:
- Are you a registered specialist orthodontist?
Registered orthodontic specialists have completed an additional two-to-three year master’s degree in orthodontics. Straightening teeth is what they do all day! This means they have seen most clinical situations before and have the experience to get the best result for you. It is unlikely that a general dental provider could have developed the same level of expertise as a specialist orthodontist.
- How many Invisalign cases have you treated?
Orthodontists who focus on Invisalign will routinely treat many Invisalign cases per year. By choosing an orthodontist with experience, you increase the probability that they have the experience to treat a case like yours.
How much does Invisalign cost?
Invisalign treatment can cost between £3,000 and £6,000 depending on your treatment needs. Splash Orthodontics have payment plans available to help with the cost of treatment.
Will Invisalign treatment be painful?
Most people experience temporary, minor discomfort for a few days at the beginning of each new stage of treatment. This is normal and is typically described as a feeling of pressure. It is a sign that the Invisalign aligners are working sequentially to move your teeth to their final destination. This discomfort typically goes away after a couple of days
Will wearing the aligners affect my speech?
Like all orthodontic treatments, aligners may temporarily affect the speech of some people and you may have a slight lisp for a day or two. However, as your tongue gets used to having aligners in your mouth, any lisp or minor speech impediment caused by the aligners should disappear.
How often must I wear the aligners?
Aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing and flossing. They can be taken out for meetings etc. but you must aim to wear the aligners for at least 22 hours per day.
