Invisalign uncovered

In this blog, we're delving into the world of Invisalign, addressing your most common questions and taking you beyond the basics.

Invisalign isn't just about straightening teeth; it's about enhancing comfort and boosting your confidence, all while seamlessly fitting into your lifestyle.

So, let’s dive into your frequently asked Invisalign questions and empower you with knowledge and inspiration for your own smile transformation.

How does Invisalign work compared to fixed braces?

Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners to gently move your teeth, while traditional braces use brackets and wires. Both options are effective, but Invisalign has the advantage of being very discreet.

Is Invisalign as effective as fixed braces?

Absolutely! Invisalign is just as effective as traditional braces for treating many orthodontic issues like crooked teeth, crowding and spacing. Only occasionally do we recommend one option over the other.

Can Invisalign help with bite issues?

Yes, Invisalign braces can be used to correct various bite discrepancies, including overbites, underbites, crossbites and open bites. For severe cases, a combination of Invisalign and jaw surgery may be necessary for the best outcome.

Are there any age restrictions?

Invisalign isn’t limited by age and can be used to treat children, teenagers and adults. It’s never too late to enjoy the confidence that comes with a beautiful smile.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Invisalign treatment times vary according to your specific case. Most treatments take 6 to 18 months, but very minor changes can often be achieved in less time. We’ll be able to give you an accurate estimate at your initial consultation.

Are Invisalign aligners painful or uncomfortable to wear?

Your aligners may cause you some initial discomfort as your teeth and mouth adjust, but they’re typically more comfortable than fixed braces. We’ll provide you with some tips to help you adapt quickly.

How often do I need to wear my Invisalign aligners for each day?

For the best results, you should wear your Invisalign aligners for 20–22 hours every day. You should only take them to eat and drink and clean your teeth. It’s fine to keep them in for drinking water (and a great reason to drink more!).

Can I remove my Invisalign aligners for special occasions?

While it’s important to wear your aligners consistently, it’s usually okay to remove them for a special event. We’ve had patients take them out for birthdays, weddings and presentations. Just check with your orthodontist beforehand.

What are Invisalign attachments, and will I need them?

Attachments are small tooth-coloured dots of composite that help to grip the aligners for more precise tooth movement. Most patients do need attachments, and your 3D treatment plan will show you where they’ll be positioned. Thankfully, they’re very discreet and easy to fit and remove.

Are there any restrictions on what I can eat?

You can remove your Invisalign aligners to enjoy most foods during your treatment. Just make sure your teeth are clean before you pop your aligners back in. If your teeth feel tender as they start to move, stick to softer foods for the first few days.

Will Invisalign treatment affect my speech?

Some of our patients develop a slight lisp when they first start wearing their aligners. This typically goes away within a few days. The best thing you can do to speed up the process is to keep talking.

How often will I need to visit the practice?

You’ll need to come and see us every 10–15 weeks so that we can check your progress and give you your new aligners. We use DentalMonitoring to keep in touch between appointments, so you can be assured that your treatment is on track.

When will I start to see results?

Your smile will start to improve quite quickly, and many patients notice a difference within the first month. Each aligner will move your teeth little by little towards your goal, which you’ll be able to visualise with the help of our 3D treatment planning software.

What happens if I lose or damage an Invisalign aligner?

If your aligners go MIA or break, start wearing the previous set and contact us straight away. We’ll usually advise you to move on to the next set of aligners in the sequence early. If you’ve lost multiple sets of aligners, we’ll need to organise replacements.

Will I need to wear retainers after Invisalign?

Yes, we’ll give you fixed and removable retainers to wear at the end of your treatment. You’ll need to wear retainers indefinitely to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original position.

What is the cost of Invisalign treatment?

There are several different Invisalign options available depending on how complex your case is and how long your treatment is likely to take. Our prices include every step of your treatment, and we have monthly payment plans to help you spread the cost of your new smile.

Is Invisalign available through the NHS?

Invisalign is only available to our private patients and is not covered by NHS funding.

How do I choose the right practice for my Invisalign treatment?

Look for an experienced provider and consider their reputation, patient reviews and your experience during your free consultation. Our orthodontists are specialists who have undergone years of dedicated training in orthodontics. Invisalign uses a tier system that reflects the number of cases each provider has completed. Dr Iain Hoeltschi is a Diamond provider – the highest tier available.

Where can I ask more questions?

If you have more questions for our team, we’d be delighted to meet you for a no-obligation consultation. Consultations are free for adults 18 and over. If you’re under 18, your dentist can refer you to us for a free NHS assessment where we can discuss all your options, including Invisalign.
